American Forces take Rome in NCAO Op Diadem at Adventure Beach on April 11
Over 100 AirSoft enthusiasts came to Myrtle Beach’s Adventure Beach Scenario Paintball and AirSoft Park on April 11 to participate in the North Carolina AirSoft Association’s Op Diadem.
Based on the WWII Battle of Cassino (1944), where American Forces took on German’s for control of Rome.
In the AirSoft re-enactment of the battle, players were broken up into tan and green forces. The “Green” American Forces (64 troops strong) were led by Joey “Preacher” Bruner of SG-12, while German General Kyle 'Halo' Thaggard of Task Force 16 led the 48-player “Tan” force in an interdiction effort to stop the Americans from taking Rome.
“I was very excited to see the turn out on an Easter Weekend. We may have had 150 if it was not for that,” Adventure Beach owner Kevin Shimwell said. “Although I was pleased to have hosted the event and looking forward to many more. I had a lot of fun doing this game. I went as far as to find authentic WWII field office boxes, Ammo crates and gas cans to use as props for the game.”
The game also debut some new special effects at Adventure Beach, using fireworks to emphasis artillery strikes during the battle
“I had a lot of fun launching the mortar shell pyrotechnics, that were purchased from Willard’s Fireworks in North Myrtle Beach.”
At the end of play, the American team prevailed, with a final score of 2775 to 975. Points were earned by completing various missions and finding/maintaining control of various props though out the day.
“It wasn’t so much about winning as having fun,” Preacher said, “I had some really good teams working with me, and that is what it is all about: team cohesion. You have to keep the squads together and send the right squads for the right mission.”
Awards for the American side included:
· • MVP: Doug "Chuck Norris" Reynolds
· • Most Valuable Team Raptor 1
· •Sportsmanship Award Alex "Puppet Master" Schiller
· • Junior Player Award: Amber "Tinker" Bruner.
For the Germans, Halo issued awards for:
· • MVP: Nick Norris
· • Most Valuable Team: Sons of the South (based at Adventure Beach)
· • Sportsmanship Award: Shawn "Diablo" McGrady
· • Junior Player Award: John "Runner" Galvin.
Halo said the event was run smoothly and the refs were abundant.
“Kevin puts on one heck on an event. There was so much going on and, for the most part, it went on seamlessly. There always seemed to be a ref around when one was needed, and if there wasn't one there, a short minute or two and one arrived if needed. They had to put up with a lot of type A personalities and hold their ground. Not always an easy job. A round of applause to Kevin and the staff of ABP!”
The event was refereed by members of Port City Militia and Shadow Group, Adventure Beach’s resident scenario paintball team.
“Many thanks to my Staff, Players and support personal who participated,” Shimwell said. “They’re help made this event’s success possible.”
AirSoft Carolina, out of Ashville, NC, was on hand for sales of guns, ammo and accessories as well as for gun repairs.
Adventure Beach is a short drive from Myrtle Beach, located on Hwy 905, just a few miles north of Hwy. 9. For more information, go to www.abpaintball.com or call 843-222-9081.
